Community Level Responses: Mitigating Crimes and Criminal Activities in Irepo Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study explored the prevailing trends and underlying factors influencing crime and community-level response in Irepo Local Government Area (LGA) of Oyo State, Nigeria. The study was motivated by persistent reports of theft, burglary, and youth-related offences that threaten community safety and socioeconomic development in the study area.  A total of 383 respondents were sampled, and 329 valid responses were analysed. Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Community Policing Initiative members, and adult residents across communities in Irepo LGA are respondents in this study. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and complemented with secondary sources such as government reports and scholarly materials. Descriptive statistical analysis was employed to interpret and analyse the data. Findings revealed that community safety and socio-economic development are achievable through institutional community-level responses to counter criminality activities, including community policing and local vigilante groups, with adequate funding, training, and coordination among security agencies. This makes the strategic responses to crimes and criminal activities responsible and responsive. The study concluded that crime prevention in Irepo LGA requires a multidimensional approach that combines socioeconomic empowerment, infrastructural development, and strengthened community-based security mechanisms. It recommended increased government investment in employment creation, police capacity building, and citizen participation to ensure sustainable peace and social stability.
